Surgery has traditionally involved invasive procedures, with trauma induced by the therapeutic procedure accepted as necessary to benefit the patient. Today, the innovation of digital imaging technology, combined with optical engineering and improved video displays allows surgeons to operate inside body cavities without large incisions to allow the hands access to the organs.

Minimally invasive surgery has significantly changed the surgical treatment of many diseases, reducing or eliminating the "collateral damage" required to gain access to the organ requiring surgery.

Early technology sacrificed the value of a natural three-dimensional image, depth perception, and articulated movement. Today's robotic surgery addresses these limitations and allows the application of minimally invasive surgery to a broader spectrum of patients and diseases.

This journal reports on progress as surgical robots afford fine motor control, magnified three-dimensional imaging and articulated instruments.
